The Role of Mathematical Modelling in Solving Real-World Problems

Mathematical modelling is one of the most important approaches through which mathematics is connected with the physical, biological, economic, technological, and social worlds. A mathematical model translates a real-world situation into mathematical language by identifying relevant variables, establishing relationships among them, and expressing those relationships through equations, functions, graphs, probability distributions, or computational algorithms. The resulting model can then be analyzed, solved, simulated, and compared with observations. Mathematical modelling is therefore not simply a technique for solving equations; it is a systematic process of abstraction, interpretation, validation, and refinement. Modern modelling incorporates differential equations, linear algebra, probability, statistics, optimization, numerical analysis, and computational mathematics. It is used in population dynamics, epidemiology, climate science, engineering, finance, transportation, industrial production, and many other fields. Mathematical modelling texts emphasize the formulation of equations from real-world assumptions and the use of analytical and numerical methods to investigate their consequences. This paper examines the conceptual foundations of mathematical modelling, its principal stages, major mathematical techniques, interdisciplinary applications, advantages, limitations, and future significance. It argues that effective mathematical modelling requires not only mathematical competence but also careful interpretation of the underlying real-world system. The growing availability of computational resources and data is further expanding the possibilities for mathematical modelling, allowing increasingly complex systems to be represented and analyzed.
