Abstract

Forest ecosystems are essential components of the global environment and provide a wide range of ecological, climatic, economic, and social functions. Forests store carbon, regulate water cycles, protect soils, support biodiversity, influence regional climates, and provide resources and livelihoods for millions of people. Their role in environmental sustainability is particularly important because forests connect climate regulation, ecosystem functioning, biodiversity conservation, and human well-being. At the same time, deforestation, degradation, wildfire, climate change, pollution, and unsustainable resource use threaten forest integrity. This paper examines nine major dimensions of the role of forests in global environmental sustainability, including carbon storage, biodiversity conservation, water regulation, soil protection, climate regulation, ecosystem services, sustainable livelihoods, forest threats, and conservation and restoration strategies.
