Abstract

Effective managerial competencies are crucial for fostering excellence in any organization, particularly in complex and high-pressure environments such as law enforcement. In an era where leadership challenges and governance issues continue to undermine public trust in institutions globally, it is vital to identify and cultivate the skills that enable managers to lead effectively and drive organizational success. This study identified key managerial competencies critical for policing excellence within the South African Police Service (SAPS) in KwaZulu-Natal. An interpretivist research philosophy was adopted to explore the subjective experiences and interpretations of police managers in the South African Police Service (SAPS), KwaZulu-Natal. A qualitative, exploratory research approach was used to gain in-depth insights into the managerial competencies required for policing excellence. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 11 purposively selected participants, including Lieutenant Colonels, Colonels, Brigadiers, and Major Generals. Thematic analysis was employed to identify patterns and themes in the data, revealing critical competencies for effective police management. Ethical guidelines, including voluntary participation, confidentiality, and informed consent, were strictly followed throughout the study. The findings emphasize the importance of Emotional Intelligence (EQ), including self-awareness, self-regulation, and empathy, as essential for effective leadership in policing. The study suggests that SAPS leadership training should integrate managerial competencies to enhance police effectiveness and organizational success.
